Chances of Math Graduate School (Any Advice is Greatly Appreciated!)

Post by koshun » Mon Jul 31, 2023 12:51 pm

Hi all!

I'm working on my applications for an applied mathematics PhD for admissions Fall 2024 in either financial mathematics and mathematical modeling. I wanted some feedback on my chances and whether or not I should work full time for a year before applying (or even apply for a masters rather than PhD).

• University: Private Tech School
• Awards/Honors: Dean's List, Small Internship Awards, Business Honor Society (Top 10% of undergraduates), Math Honor Society (Top 30% of undergraduates)
• Major: B.S Mathematics, B.S. Quantitative Finance
• Minor: Computer Science
• Math GPA: 3.98
• Overall GPA: 3.97
• Research Experience: Working on 2 research theses, completed 3 academic projects with papers for all of them, and completed some research/mathematical modeling at my summer internships. No publications.
• Recommendations: 4, one is from the VP of the company I interned at for data sciences for two summers, my research advisor for my undergraduate thesis (he is also my academic advisor), a mathematician who publishes and goes to conferences often (I TAed real analysis under him and took two courses: topology and real analysis), and the last is from a computer science professor who I TAed under for 3 years now and knows me very well personally and my research/teaching capabilities.
• Teaching Experience: Worked as a TA for several different courses (differential geometry, real analysis, optimization, computer science)
• GRE Revised General Test: N/A (not planning to take since most programs are not accepted or optional)
• GRE Subject Test in Mathematics: going to take in September
• Coursework: Calc I, Calc II, Calc III, Probability & Statistics, Linear Algebra, Abstract Algebra, Real Analysis, Complex Analysis, Numerical Analysis, Discrete Mathematics, Differential Geometry, Differential Equations, Optimization, Proofs & Refutations, Topology I, Time Series Analysis, Stochastic Processes, Stochastic Calculus, Econometrics, Algorithms, Game Theory

I have taken 5 graduate level courses (4 finance related and 1 math related). I have also two senior research theses (one relating to quantitative research and the other relating to random walks on groups).

For reference my schools so far are:
Columbia University - Applied Mathematics
Carnegie Mellon - Mathematical Sciences
Princeton - Applied and Computational Mathematics
MIT - Pure and Applied Mathematics
Stanford - Mathematics
Yale - Applied Mathematics
Duke - Mathematics
Harvard - Applied Mathematics
UChicago - Computational and Applied Mathematics
Brown University - Applied Mathematics
Johns Hopkins - Applied Mathematics and Statistics
Caltech - Applied + Computational Mathematics
Cornell - Applied Mathematics
UC Berkeley - Applied Mathematics
UPenn - Applied and Computational Mathematics

Thank you for any advice or suggestions offered.
