If you have to ask this question, don't apply.

How poor are grad school students in the US? How much does moving to a big city in the US cost coming from the EU? I have a reasonable chance of getting into a good (around top 5) grad program in the US, but not sure if it's worth it or if I can even afford it. The school is undoubtedly better than any place I'd get into in the EU, but worried about the costs and pay, especially coming from outside the US. The stipends seem quite low even in top places, considering that many of them are in expensive cities.
The thing is a lot of international students from Asia alongside with the rest of the 2nd and 3rd world countries wish to do a Ph.D in the United States with immigration in mind as end game.

And for European students doing postdoc or Ph.D in the United States is considered a rite of passage of sorts.

Yes, schools in Europe treat their grad students more like employees with better pay, worklife balance and benefits. But also the admissions process to my understanding is also a bit different. I think most Ph.D programs in Europe requires a masters degree and also an area of student/purposal of research topic and some require you to get an advisor at their school before applying.
