2024 Sweat Thread
2024 Sweat Thread
I'm creating this year's Sweat Thread. I felt compelled to do so because
(a) I just submitted a couple applications then realize I made too many grammatical errors in my statement of purpose so now my palms are even more sweaty.
(b) I also created the admissions profile thread and I want the glory of being remembered as the person who created the 2 most useful threads of the year

Out of paranoia I checked my statement of purpose that I have already submitted with my completed application and found grammatical errors.
Ignorance is bliss

I would imagine most wouldn't care, perhaps would be a different matter if we're applying for the English program.fiveier.analysis wrote: ↑Fri Oct 13, 2023 4:35 pmLOLmathph wrote: ↑Fri Oct 13, 2023 8:29 amI'm creating this year's Sweat Thread. I felt compelled to do so because

Sure it shows that we're a bit careless, but I'm sure it can be much worst. Like putting down the wrong school for your personal statement while being cringe i.e. on your application to Harvard you mentioned "I would love to get my math Ph.D at MIT because it is my dream since I'm 4"
Though I have a feeling that schools especially these top ones don't read personal statements.

I hope so. Submitted one application over this weekend and reread my essay again and behold found grammatical errors. Guess now I'm a disgrace toomathph wrote: ↑Sun Oct 22, 2023 1:42 amI would imagine most wouldn't care, perhaps would be a different matter if we're applying for the English program.

I wrote something along those lines. Well not the age of 4 a little older than that. But still sounds cheesy as hell.mathph wrote: ↑Sun Oct 22, 2023 1:42 amSure it shows that we're a bit careless, but I'm sure it can be much worst. I just asked someone who I know has always been on the admissions committee at my school.anticategories wrote: ↑Mon Oct 30, 2023 11:04 amI hope so. Basically, after they filter out those who are obvious 'no's i.e. no research experience, no relevant math coursework, they do read all personal statement of all remaining applications.
I'm still pretty convinced that some grammatical errors or, as you say, 'cheesy as hell' statements gets a free pass. Though he kind of insinuated that messing up the school name is a death sentence.
