2024 Sweat Thread
2024 Sweat Thread
I'm creating this year's Sweat Thread. I felt compelled to do so because
(a) I just submitted a couple applications then realize I made too many grammatical errors in my statement of purpose so now my palms are even more sweaty.
(b) I also created the admissions profile thread and I want the glory of being remembered as the person who created the 2 most useful threads of the year

Out of paranoia I checked my statement of purpose that I have already submitted with my completed application and found grammatical errors.
Ignorance is bliss

I would imagine most wouldn't care, perhaps would be a different matter if we're applying for the English program.fiveier.analysis wrote: ↑Fri Oct 13, 2023 4:35 pmLOLmathph wrote: ↑Fri Oct 13, 2023 8:29 amI'm creating this year's Sweat Thread. I felt compelled to do so because

Sure it shows that we're a bit careless, but I'm sure it can be much worst. Like putting down the wrong school for your personal statement while being cringe i.e. on your application to Harvard you mentioned "I would love to get my math Ph.D at MIT because it is my dream since I'm 4"
Though I have a feeling that schools especially these top ones don't read personal statements.

I wrote something along those lines. Well not the age of 4 a little older than that. But still sounds cheesy as hell.mathph wrote: ↑Sun Oct 22, 2023 1:42 amSure it shows that we're a bit careless, but I'm sure it can be much worst. Basically, after they filter out those who are obvious 'no's i.e. no research experience, no relevant math coursework, they do read all personal statement of all remaining applications.
I'm still pretty convinced that some grammatical errors or, as you say, 'cheesy as hell' statements gets a free pass. Though he kind of insinuated that messing up the school name is a death sentence.

Re: 2024 Sweat Thread
Just submitted all my applications but darn my professors are taking their sweet time filling out the recommendations. Hopefully that won't drag me down.
Do y'all think fall semester grades will matter that much? I think I might be getting one C so hopefully they won't ask for it

Well the responsibility lies on you to make sure that the letters are submitted properly and on time. So I would make sure to send your instructor a gently reminder a week or two before the deadline.mathph wrote: ↑Mon Dec 04, 2023 11:16 amJust submitted all my applications but darn my professors are taking their sweet time filling out the recommendations. Hi.
Has anyone heard back from Ohio State? I saw on GradCafe that they send their first rounds admissions today, but my application still says ‘Pending’ (I sent my application early December)
Now I’m worried!

The grad coordinator just confirmed that they haven't yet released the first round of admissions. In fact, it won't be released till next week, and the information on GradCafe is false.
Re: 2024 Sweat Thread
post on Grad Cafe is pointing people to check their spam folder. It's likely just a fishing scheme.donbradman wrote: ↑Wed Jan 03, 2024 4:25 pmThe grad coordinator just confirmed that they haven't yet released the first round of admissions. That makes me feel a lot better! I was stressing so much.
Re: 2024 Sweat Thread
in 2022 it seems like the first round was accepted on the 5th, so hoping that’s the case this year since I haven’t heard/seen anything today…
Re: 2024 Sweat Thread
that's true. either way it looks like they send out acceptances earlier than most schools. hopefully by the end of the week! also, i was lurking your profile and saw you say you're in a niche subfield. i'm also in a niche field that is quite represented at chicago, so i was just curious if we are actually into the same stuff! you can pm me if you dont want to say on here

Re: 2024 Sweat Thread

Re: 2024 Sweat Thread

Re: 2024 Sweat Thread
There is an acceptance on GradCafe for UChicago, apparently sent out today. Can anyone confirm?
Re: 2024 Sweat Thread
Yes, I got an acceptance by checking the portal today.
Re: 2024 Sweat Thread
Damn rejection for me. Sad!
Re: 2024 Sweat Thread
Does anyone know how much Ohio State University pays their (pure) math students? I got accepted this morning!

lol why would you put that here. This is a place for people to share reasons for why they are sweating and not to put posts that cause others to sweat. (that aside idk the answer to the question and congrats!)

Re: 2024 Sweat Thread
How many people from this forum or outside this forum (acquaintances) have heard back from Ohio State? I can see only 2 people, but that seems a bit odd, given the profile of the other applicants.
Re: 2024 Sweat Thread
I got accepted yesterday. Got an email and checked for a status update on the portal. They sent the offer letter today

Did anyone get rejected from Ohio State a couple of days ago? Or did they only accept people?
Re: 2024 Sweat Thread
Just got admitted at Binghamton. Do people know about the funding situation there? They said the decision would be made in February and I wonder if most people they admit at this stage get funding or if it's still going to be selective.

i got an email to set up my wolverine access account. maybe check your spam? also has anyone heard from penn yet? i won't lie i'm a little surprised they get open house invites out so fast, considering the application was due later on dec 31? was it also due on dec 31 last year? if it was due earlier like dec 15 it would make sense to not have the open house out yetboredmathguy wrote: ↑Fri Jan 12, 2024 3:10 pmI don't think I got another portal for my Michigan application, where can I find it?sunflower wrote: ↑Wed Jan 10, 2024 11:43 pmjust as an aside, did you guys get a portal for penn or brown? i got one for michigan, but the other two i only have the applyweb. will there be a portal for them too?coffeebeanbag wrote: ↑Wed Jan 10, 2024 11:23 pm

Re: 2024 Sweat Thread
Just got an email from the University of Washington asking for a writing sample or essay. I didn't submit one with my application since it was marked as optional. Not sure if this is a standard request or if it indicates I've made it through the first round. Did anyone else get this?
Edit: Got an email saying this was an automated message, disregard.

Does NYU require official transcript? I just saw on Courant website that they want official transcripts uploaded but I submitted the application without any notification
