I got accepted to the DIMACS ergodic theory/fourier analysis project last week. If anyone accepted to DIMACS wants to talk, my dm's are open.

Re: 2024 REU Programs
Just wanna put this here to show future freshmen there is hope! Also advice related to some things that might have worked for me (not an REU mentor, take with a grain of salt).
Year: Freshman
Institution: Top 50/large public
GPA: 4.0
Major: Mathematics
Type of Student: Male, not URM
Coursework: (Undergrad) Calc 1-3, Linear 1, 2, Abstract Algebra, Analysis 1, 2, Problem-Solving Seminars, Reading Course in Field Theory and Algebraic Number Theory (Grad) Topology, Measure Theory, Algebra
Other Things that Might Matter/did help: Solid LOR's, took Topology in hs, personal struggles, demonstrated strong interest in the project of interest, sitting in on lectures related to the project of interest.
Programs Applied:
Baruch - rejected
Budapest Semesters in Mathematics - accepted, declined
UMN Duluth - rejected
UMN Twin Cities - rejected
Clemson - waiting
Rutgers DIMACS - ACCEPTED, ATTENDING!
Yale SUMRY - presumably rejected
UMich - presumably rejected
Advice for future applicants who I know read these things:
Personal statements really matter. I think that because in my personal statement I showed that I had looked into the project beyond what was expected and I demonstrated a lot of enthusiasm, my lack of research experience, extracurriculars, work experience, and volume of coursework were overlooked. I also think that you should apply to a program with only one project in mind. You would rather want one prof to put you high in their list than a dozen to put you 10 spots down. Also, I think the LOR's matter. Make a good impression on your professors! I also spent a ridiculous amount of time researching the programs and writing my personal statements completely unique to each project. I don't think you should write a modular statement of purpose unless they are for very, very similar programs unless you are applying to a less competitive program or one that is lower on your list of top choices.
Also, anyone accepted to DIMACS pls reach out!

How is it physically possible to have taken that many classes as a freshman?

Re: 2024 REU Programs
I just did AP Calc BC, 3 math classes before college, and begged the department to let me take upper division classes first sem. Measure Theory, Field Theory/ANT, grad algebra, analysis 2 are all current classes. I think the biggest barrier to doing this is just not having the information. It has not yet been overwhelming, but having good professors has played a role in this.greenface1998 wrote: ↑Sun Mar 10, 2024 8:16 pmdiceydicey wrote: ↑Sun Mar 10, 2024 8:10 pmJust wanna put this here to show future freshmen there is hope! You’re the reasons PhD applications are so brutal for us regular humans lol. I've been looking through the math PhD admissions profiles and admissions are absolutely brutal. I wanna go to a top school but it is insane what it takes, so I am tryna make sure I am on track. It's too bad all the smart people want to do math. Best of luck with your graduate studies!greenface1998 wrote: ↑Sun Mar 10, 2024 8:45 pmYou’re the reasons PhD applications are so brutal for us regular humans lol. Re: 2024 REU Programs
Baruch sent out their rejection emails. The email said 830 applicants for 13 spots, which is pretty crazy. I guess a lot of them are international students applying for the 3 international spots, but that is still wild.
