Email tips for waitlist

Post by probabelitist » Mon Feb 12, 2024 10:58 am

Do you guys have any tips on writing an email to demonstrate interest as a waitlisted student? Many online forums have suggested doing this, but I wasn't sure how to express what I want to ask about (probability of being accepted, what the waitlist situation is like, when can I expect back to hear, etc.) + expressing my own interest.

Honestly, I asked Chat GPT and here's what it said:

Writing a letter of continued interest to a Math PhD program waitlist is an opportunity to reaffirm your enthusiasm for the program and update the admissions committee on any new achievements or developments since you submitted your application. Here are some key elements to include in your letter:

Introduction: Start by expressing your gratitude for being placed on the waitlist and reaffirm your strong interest in the program.

Updates: Highlight any new accomplishments or developments since you submitted your application. This could include publications, conference presentations, awards, relevant coursework, or any other achievements that demonstrate your commitment to advancing in the field of mathematics.

Relevant Experience: Remind the admissions committee of your relevant experience in mathematics, such as research projects, internships, teaching assistantships, or other activities that showcase your preparedness for doctoral study.

Fit with the Program: Reiterate why you believe the program is an ideal fit for your academic and career goals. Mention specific faculty members, research areas, or resources that align with your interests.

Reaffirmation of Interest: Emphasize your continued enthusiasm for the program and your eagerness to join the academic community.

Additional Information: If there are any extenuating circumstances or new information that you believe the admissions committee should be aware of, such as updated GRE scores or relevant experiences, be sure to include them in your letter.

Closing: Thank the admissions committee for considering your application and express your hope for a favorable outcome.

Remember to keep your letter concise, professional, and focused on the key points outlined above. Additionally, make sure to follow any specific instructions provided by the program regarding communication with waitlisted applicants.
