When to reach out about status
I am wanting to reach out to schools to ask about my application status without being pushy or it impacting my application. I’ve been wanting to wait until at least March, but didn’t know if it was best to wait more than that. I am kind of on a timer, because if I don’t get in anywhere and take a masters, I will have to get a lease somewhere without available housing. The later I reach out about potential waitlists, the less likely it is I get housing within 30 minutes of my prospective masters institution, which is stressing me out just as much as getting into schools. All of my apps were due by mid December, but almost none of them seem to have even sent a first wave yet (judging by results here and gradcafe). Any advice is welcome
Re: When to reach out about status
I asked programs about my status the other day and most of them got back to me.
With regards to your application being impacted by asking about your status: If asking harmed your application, would you really want to work under such petty people?
In any case, the people handling these questions are probably not those reviewing applications (office staff vs professors).

My contact/potential advisor may not be petty, but person on the admissions committee that they pass the question to might be.With regards to your application being impacted by asking about your status: If asking harmed your application, would you really want to work under such petty people?

Re: When to reach out about status
Waiting until March seems pretty reasonable to me. I would probably reach out after March 15 to programs that remain silent, but I don't have concernings (like yours) about not getting a result soon.
