Re: 2025 Applicant Profiles and Admission Results
Sure. I have ADHD which made my experience in undergrad really difficult. My biggest weakness point is taking exams. After some thought, I decided it would be better for my mental health to choose a different path. I got a job offer in data analysis making pretty good money and feel excited for my future!KovenFan wrote: ↑Tue Jan 28, 2025 3:14 pmDo you mind sharing why you won't be going to grad school anymore?catluvr11 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 28, 2025 2:46 pmI decided I am no longer going to grad school, but I’m going to post my status updates here to help anyone who checks this forum.

To add, I wasn’t a very competitive applicant. My GPA was 3.8 and I had research experience, but no publications and 0 grad level courses.

Maybe consider withdrawing your applications if you don't plan to go to grad school anymore, you may be preventing someone else from receiving a spot.catluvr11 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 28, 2025 2:46 pmI decided I am no longer going to grad school, but I’m going to post my status updates here to help anyone who checks this forum.

That would be a nice thing to do. All the schools in your list are decent places that many people want to go, but it's up to you.glumbr wrote: ↑Thu Jan 30, 2025 10:17 amMaybe consider withdrawing your applications if you don't plan to go to grad school anymore, you may be preventing someone else from receiving a spot.catluvr11 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 28, 2025 2:46 pmI decided I am no longer going to grad school, but I’m going to post my status updates here to help anyone who checks this forum.

Re: 2025 Applicant Profiles and Admission Results
I think it depends on the school. Some of them explicitly request it and will give you instructions on how to submit updated grades in the portal, and others don’t give you any mechanism to do so.

Also, my research doesn’t exactly align with my intended area, so I expect my applications are carried by my GPA/courses and personal statements, in which I wrote a lot about professors at the school, specific parts of their research that I’m interested in, and the elements of my own research experience that overlap

Type of Student: Domestic
GRE Revised General Test: n/a
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics: n/a
Program Applying: Pure Math/Applied depending where Probability Theory falls
Research Experience: Thesis in application of complex analysis stuff, a few semester long projects with a research lab relating to probability theory, I worked as an undergrad researcher in a plasma lab for a year and now have been at a national lab doing research in Statistical Mechanics. Presented and presenting at APS, no formal publications.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: 5 Community scholarships, Dean's Honors every semester of enrollment, Putnam Honorable Mention?
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Automation industry internship, Plasma lab, National lab (year-round now). I also TA now for 'advanced' undergrad probability.
Math Courses Taken: (1 semester unless otherwise indicated) Undegrad: ODEs (I+II), LinAlg (I+II), Applied Vector Calculus, Analysis, Algebra, PDE Analysis, Probability Theory, Stochastic Processes, Stochastic Analysis
Graduate (during UG): Probability Theory (I+II), Stochastic Computational Methods, Probability Seminar (Random Graph Theory).
Other: I am a double with my Engineering Physics where I took the generic engineering courses along with lots of material mechanics. My private research now is mostly all StatMech and using Probability, which I thought tied together into a good essay but it may not have landed too well as of 2/12 lol.

Program Applying: PhD in Applied Mathematics, Biomathematics

Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Dean's List throughout undergrad, recieved an award from REU for quality of research project.
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Campus tutor for Calc 1-3. Participant in home University's Directed Reading Program in Homological Algebra.
Math Courses Taken: Standard Math sequences (Analysis & Algebra), one Graduate-level Topology, Partial Differential Equations, Probability, Mathematical Statistics, Numerical Analysis, Mathematics for Machine Learning.
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: I really honed in on the combination of mathematics and biology in my application. I know that I ultimately want to end up doing math with topics in biology, so I framed my application around that (topology and using that for big-data topological data analysis, PDEs and cell modeling/developmental models, etc.). Although my grades have been good, I figured I lacked a lot of the diversity in research and other projects that people going into a Math PhD would have, so I figured that would be my niche that would potentially make me attractive to schools.

Undergrad Institution: Large state school, U.S., not known for math
Major(s): Mathematics
GPA: 3.99
Math GPA: 4.00
Type of Student: USA, white male
GRE Revised General Test: NA
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics: NA
Program Applying: PhDs in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, emphasis on math bio
Research Experience: An REU at my home institution, an REU at one of the schools I applied to, and an undergraduate thesis, all in math bio.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Honor roll for almost every semester, multiple scholarships from my state and university, a math department award, and a few travel grants for conferences.
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: I didn't do much outside my courses for my first 2 years. In year 3, I began research with a math professor, and in year 4, became a learning assistant and vice president of my university's math club.
Math Courses Taken: Standard sequence up to Advanced Calc 1/2 and Abstract Algebra 1. Probability, ODE 1/2, PDE 1, Math Bio 1, Complex Variables, Computational Algebra, Differential Geometry, and Topology. No graduate courses because I didn't want to pay extra for them.
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: I feel like my biggest drawback is that I haven't taken any graduate courses; it seems like almost everyone else who has posted has taken at least one. However, I have a decent amount of research experience and lots of symposium/conference presentations from them, including an invited talk. I also got some really valuable experience from the math club by helping to organize events (undergrad workshops, competitions, etc.) and volunteering. I think my personal statement was good, and I had solid letters from research advisors and previous/current department chairs. I wasn't expecting to be accepted to Northwestern, but I think one of my references and their recent focus on math bio helped.

Re: 2025 Applicant Profiles and Admission Results
I hope this information can be useful to someone in the future, since I found it helpful when I was applying.
Undergrad Institution: Top UK Uni
Masters Institution: Top UK Uni
Major(s): Mathematics
Math GPA: ~90/100
Type of Student: IAM (UK based)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 970 (97%)
Program Applying: Applied Math
Research Experience: Two summer projects with papers.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Top 5% ranking each year.
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Tutoring freshers and a couple of math mentoring schemes.
Math Courses Taken:
Functional Analysis, Spectral Theory
Analysis of PDEs at varying levels of specialization.
Computational PDEs, Numerical Analysis, Computational Linear Algebra
Probability Theory, Stochastic Processes
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help:
The letter writers were my supervisors for the summer projects. I don't recommend having letter writers as just lecturers from courses you've taken. Maybe if they ask for 3 recommendations, having just one is OK.
I believe that as a result, the letters written for me were extremely good (though I've never actually seen them). I advise you all to put as much effort as you can into REUs for this exact reason.
I only applied to programs where my letter writers advised me to apply to. This makes sense because they know what kind of math you like and who (they know) might be a good fit. Likewise, if another professor sees who wrote the letter and knows them very well, it helps a lot. I don't believe the typical scattershot approach of applying to 10 to 15 programs is helpful (and especially not for your wallet!).
That being said, none of this guarantees anything, and I feel like I just had good luck as well.

Applying to Where:
MIT - Admitted on (4th Feb)
Stanford - Rejected on (5th Feb)
Cambridge - Admitted on (14th Feb)
Oxford - Interviewed

I think data points are useful so I’ll post mine I guess, though I’ll be easily identifiable from it lol.
Undergrad Institution: UCLA
Major(s): Math
GPA: 4.0
Math GPA: 4.0
Type of Student: DWM
GRE Revised General Test: Did not take
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics: Did not take
Program Applying: Pure, I do some blend of homotopy theory and number theory
Research Experience: 3 preprints
Math Courses Taken: 39 graduate courses
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: Strong letters, from what I’ve heard this is one of if not the most important part.
Applying to Where:
MIT - Accepted February 4
Harvard - Accepted January 21
Princeton - Accepted January 23
UChicago - Accepted January 15

All in all I’m extremely happy with how things turned out, and grateful for the opportunities I’ve had thus far in my mathematical career. I have some thinking to do about which offer to accept (and likely won’t decide until after open houses), but I’m excited to see what the world has in store for me from here on out. :)

How did you take 39 grad math courses? I don't even think I took 39 courses during college

Quarter system, I took like 1 my first quarter, 2 my second, and like 4-5 (though sometimes 3) every quarter beyond that.
As a result I have to take 2 gen eds next quarter because I completely neglected them (help).

UCLA has 4 quarters so each course is much shorter, although 39 is still large after taking that into consideration.
