Re: 2025 Applicant Profiles and Admission Results
Sure. I have ADHD which made my experience in undergrad really difficult. My biggest weakness point is taking exams. After some thought, I decided it would be better for my mental health to choose a different path. I got a job offer in data analysis making pretty good money and feel excited for my future!KovenFan wrote: ↑Tue Jan 28, 2025 3:14 pmDo you mind sharing why you won't be going to grad school anymore?catluvr11 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 28, 2025 2:46 pmI decided I am no longer going to grad school, but I’m going to post my status updates here to help anyone who checks this forum.

To add, I wasn’t a very competitive applicant. My GPA was 3.8 and I had research experience, but no publications and 0 grad level courses.
Re: 2025 Applicant Profiles and Admission Results
Maybe consider withdrawing your applications if you don't plan to go to grad school anymore, you may be preventing someone else from receiving a spot.catluvr11 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 28, 2025 2:46 pmI decided I am no longer going to grad school, but I’m going to post my status updates here to help anyone who checks this forum.

That would be a nice thing to do. All the schools in your list are decent places that many people want to go, but it's up to you.glumbr wrote: ↑Thu Jan 30, 2025 10:17 amMaybe consider withdrawing your applications if you don't plan to go to grad school anymore, you may be preventing someone else from receiving a spot.catluvr11 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 28, 2025 2:46 pmI decided I am no longer going to grad school, but I’m going to post my status updates here to help anyone who checks this forum.

Hi, did you get an official or an unofficial acceptance from UToronto? If the latter, did you hear from someone you previously contacted or the department?qkekd wrote: ↑Wed Jan 08, 2025 12:33 amUndergrad Institution: UK (well-known for maths)

GRE Subject Test in Mathematics: 970 (97%)
Program Applying: Pure Math (geometry/topology/dynamics)
Research Experience: Two summer projects at my undergraduate institution, each on number theory/dynamical systems and geometric group theory. Preprint from the first project. Also did a small engineering project during high school which led to a conference paper
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Nothing special
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Interned at a semiconductor company
Math Courses Taken: Algebraic Geometry, Algebraic Topology, Differential Geometry, Galois theory, Riemann Surfaces, Probability and Measure, Linear analysis, ... I've taken a bunch but all of these are undergraduate level

Minor(s): -
GPA: 3.85
Type of Student: Domestic South Asian Male
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics: Did Not Do
Program Applying: Pure Math Geometry/Topology
Research Experience: In the process of writing and publishing an undergraduate honors thesis in the department of Electrical Engineering
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Work as a Math Instructor and the Director of Education for a Math Learning Center ~20 hours a week all throughout Undergrad, started as a math instructor, then lead instructor, then Assistant Center Director and finally the Director of Education
Math Courses Taken:
Undergraduate: Logic/Proofs, Discrete, Linear Algebra, Advanced Calc I, Abstract Algebra I & II, Topology, Differential Geometry, Classical Algebraic Geometry, Probability, ODE I&II, Complex Variables
Graduate: Advanced Linear Algebra/Matrix theory, Differential Geometry (Taught as Differential Topology)

Re: 2025 Applicant Profiles and Admission Results
I think it depends on the school. Some of them explicitly request it and will give you instructions on how to submit updated grades in the portal, and others don’t give you any mechanism to do so.

I believe my application is really representative of a normal great applicant without any over the top achievements. Looking at the results I can proudly say that fit and SOP are very important and basically can give you an admission.

Also, my research doesn’t exactly align with my intended area, so I expect my applications are carried by my GPA/courses and personal statements, in which I wrote a lot about professors at the school, specific parts of their research that I’m interested in, and the elements of my own research experience that overlap

Major(s): Mathematics

GPA: 3.92
Math GPA: 4.0
Type of Student: Domestic asian male
GRE Revised General Test: Did not take
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 820 (77%)
TOEFL Score: N/A
Program Applying: Pure math programs strong in differential geometry/geometric analysis
Research Experience: 1 not well-known REU last summer and ongoing research at my school. No publications yet, but two papers are in preparation corresponding to these experiences. One conference presentation
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Dean’s list lol
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Learning assistant for a few intro math courses past 2 semesters, UTA for an intro physics course a few years ago, current grader for advanced linear algebra
Math Courses Taken: Undergrad courses: Complex variables, Abstract algebra I and II, real analysis I and II, curves and surfaces, probability, combinatorics, advanced linear algebra
Grad courses: Complex analysis, PDEs I and II, differential topology, Riemannian geometry
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: None of my recommenders are that well known and only one of them does research in my area of interest (diff geo). One of them is a lecturer for the courses I’ve LA’d for, but I expect they wrote a strong letter, and the other two wrote decent lefters. Also, my research doesn’t exactly align with my intended area, so I expect my applications are carried by my GPA/courses and personal statements, in which I wrote a lot about professors at the school, specific parts of their research that I’m interested in, and the elements of my own research experience that overlap

No. I do not consider the email as an acceptance as what I got from Notre Dame.donbradman wrote: ↑Sat Feb 08, 2025 8:50 pmHey, did you post on gradcafe about getting accepted to Northwestern?Umbrade wrote: ↑Mon Jan 06, 2025 12:50 pm[*]Undergrad Institution: Asian school, not so well-known

GPA: 3.83/4.00
Math GPA: 3.80/4.00
Type of Student: Domestic
GRE Revised General Test: n/a
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics: n/a
Program Applying: Pure Math/Applied depending where Probability Theory falls
Research Experience: Thesis in application of complex analysis stuff, a few semester long projects with a research lab relating to probability theory, I worked as an undergrad researcher in a plasma lab for a year and now have been at a national lab doing research in Statistical Mechanics. Presented and presenting at APS, no formal publications.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: 5 Community scholarships, Dean's Honors every semester of enrollment, Putnam Honorable Mention?
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Automation industry internship, Plasma lab, National lab (year-round now). I also TA now for 'advanced' undergrad probability.
Math Courses Taken: (1 semester unless otherwise indicated) Undegrad: ODEs (I+II), LinAlg (I+II), Applied Vector Calculus, Analysis, Algebra, PDE Analysis, Probability Theory, Stochastic Processes, Stochastic Analysis
Graduate (during UG): Probability Theory (I+II), Stochastic Computational Methods, Probability Seminar (Random Graph Theory).
Other: I am a double with my Engineering Physics where I took the generic engineering courses along with lots of material mechanics. My private research now is mostly all StatMech and using Probability, which I thought tied together into a good essay but it may not have landed too well as of 2/12 lol.
