October 2024 GRE SUBJECT TEST
I gave the september test and scored 820 with 77%tile
I tried my best and learned combinatorics which was my weak topic (inclusion-exclusion and combinations without order)
I also learnt point set topology, none of the topics I concentrated on during that one month came up in the test and due to chronic insomnia (I was only able to sleep 4 hours the night before) I messed up my test I was literally on 300 mg of caffeine but it did not help.
Since I am aiming for Mathematical finance and applied math programs. So I hope admission committee sees my score in a positive way since I am from Mechanical Engineering background.
Fellow MGRE takers, how did your test went?

this is impressive. how did you go about studying? I'm also from a nontrad math background.EulerAmongMen wrote: ↑Sun Oct 27, 2024 7:30 amI gave the september test and scored 820 with 77%tile

Re: October 2024 GRE SUBJECT TEST
I'm very frustrated now. There is only one chance for students in China like me, and I messed all things up. I thought it would be less tricky but with a lot of calculation. I spent too much time trying to prove some fundamental statements, so I had to skip some rough calculation. I think I will get less than 85%? I'm not sure, but it is obviously not enough for international students like me.

How much did you get in the September one? and which courses are you applying for?phanpu wrote: ↑Mon Oct 28, 2024 10:22 pmI'm very frustrated now. Re: October 2024 GRE SUBJECT TEST
There is no "September one" in Chinese mainland, I don't know about Hongkong or Taiwan. That's why I say "there is only one chance" (per year). I recently selected 13 programs, they all do not require GRE sub or just treat it as an optional requirement.EulerAmongMen wrote: ↑Mon Oct 28, 2024 11:44 pmHow much did you get in the September one? and which courses are you applying for?phanpu wrote: ↑Mon Oct 28, 2024 10:22 pmI'm very frustrated now. I am from India, GRE Math is conducted only once in India too. I actually had to go to nepal to give my september test. Thank God, I did because my insomniac brain decided to prank me the night before october one :/phanpu wrote: ↑Mon Oct 28, 2024 11:56 pmThere is no "September one" in Chinese mainland, I don't know about Hongkong or Taiwan. How many questions did you attempt? How many questions do you think you would probably get right?

Took it yesterday. Much easier than the one I got in September. Think I’ll get around an 830 up from a 670.

I also took it recently and thought it wasn't bad. probably about as difficult as some of the recent practice tests. Does anyone know how the scoring works?AbelianCat wrote: ↑Wed Oct 30, 2024 5:48 pmTook it yesterday. Much easier than the one I got in September. Think I’ll get around an 830 up from a 670.

I attempted all 66. I think I got 48 for sure and then had enough 50/50 guesses to probably get a 51-55 depending on luck.EulerAmongMen wrote: ↑Thu Oct 31, 2024 1:34 pmHow many questions did you attempt + guessed + did not attempt?AbelianCat wrote: ↑Wed Oct 30, 2024 5:48 pmTook it yesterday. Re: October 2024 GRE SUBJECT TEST
Having taken it 3 times now, I can honestly say there isn’t much you can do to study. You need to know so many different things that it’s really difficult to break an 800 from just a few months to a year of studying unless you already learned every subject well in school and just need to refresh. In the past, you could probably get away with memorizing commons tricks and stuff, but the questions now require a much deeper knowledge imo. With that said, if you’re in the 650-750 range, you can spam practice problems in the Schaum’s outline books to cut down on errors which should get you to an 800 at some point. Also, write down every question you remember after taking it because the same questions pop up again from my experience (this can get you a few free points and save time).KovenFan wrote: ↑Thu Oct 31, 2024 11:22 pmWhat resources did you use to prepare?AbelianCat wrote: ↑Thu Oct 31, 2024 1:42 pmI attempted all 66. I had like 2 maybe 3 questions on ODEs each time. Usually on the easier side of questions.

Re: October 2024 GRE SUBJECT TEST
Oddly, I have not received my score even though I took it relatively early. I’m a little confused.
Re: October 2024 GRE SUBJECT TEST
Got an 840 after a month of hard study, got an 850 in sep with a week of study lmao, feels like such a waste
Re: October 2024 GRE SUBJECT TEST
My target schools are pitts, penn state, Purdue, Minnesota, notre dame, uc Santa cruz, emory, tamu, msu, umass, temple, delware, Rochester.
My score in 840 (82 percentile). Just prepared for 2 weeks so couldn't do well. Is this score sendable (for optional case) ?

Re: October 2024 GRE SUBJECT TEST
I scored a 700 (54th percentile). I'm from India. Is it practical to send this to schools I'm applying to for a pure math PhD in the US? Will this affect my application when the score is required? Is this an abysmal score?

Re: October 2024 GRE SUBJECT TEST
The conventional wisdom for top 20 schools is 750+ at minimum. For optional places, TBH I wouldn't submit unless you're breaking 80% as it could do more harm than good. Since you're an international student, the pool of applicants you will be lumped into will have much higher scores than domestic students on average as well. Hopefully this helps.

Is anyone aware of how exactly the score is "scaled"? For example, does a score of 970 mean I answered two questions incorrectly?

Apologies for my late response. Yes, I did get a 970. I don't know how many I did wrong but the above post seems to indicate at most one.phanpu wrote: ↑Mon Nov 11, 2024 7:12 amYou got 970?
