Attainable PhD programs

Post by Insomnia » Sat Dec 07, 2024 3:35 pm

Hello everyone

I want to go to a US-style PhD to be able to do research in pure mathematics because I feel like other PhD positions would constrain me to work on topics related to my master's thesis. I don't want to get into particularly high-tier schools or anything but it has been hard to figure out which schools are attainable for my profile.

Both my past theses are in dynamical systems, my last one is in random matrices and mathematical physics.

Great fits for my interests are Penn State, Maryland, Rutgers, and Washington. Any one has recommendations for similar schools that would be safer?

Consider applying to Northwestern. Not really safer but seems to fit your profile

CUNY has a large dynamical systems group from what I remember. Make sure that if you apply there, do your research about the program before accepting. With the CUNY Graduate Center being a graduate school stapled onto the public CUNY system of 4-year institutions in NYC, it is not the traditional experience you would receive in a university.

Since you did not describe your current interests, one recommendation is to search through the NSF's Division of Mathematical Sciences active awards for what schools have people actively pursuing your interests.

Finally, if you're seriously worried and have no offers as it gets close to decision day, try reaching out to Rutgers/CUNY and tell them your situation and that you would commit. Both sent me last minute offers with funding before April 15th last year.
