PhD in the UK vs PhD in the US
PhD in the UK vs PhD in the US
I just wanted to get your opinions on whether you think doing a PhD in the US is better than in the UK. Of course, at the end of the day, it's a personal decision, but generally speaking, regarding future job prospects in academia, which PhD programmes would you prefer over, say, one at Cambridge or Oxford?
Re: PhD in the UK vs PhD in the US
From what I understand, it really depends where you want to work after your PhD. I think it's as simple as: UK PhDs are better for getting jobs in the UK, and US PhDs are better for getting jobs in the US. This is what I've been told, and it makes sense, because getting jobs is extremely related to what connections you and your advisors have.Hagoromo wrote: ↑Sun Feb 02, 2025 6:10 pmI just wanted to get your opinions on whether you think doing a PhD in the US is better than in the UK. IMHO - Cambridge/Oxford is on the same level as any of the US Ivies, MIT, Berkley, ETC. All depending on what your specialty, and who you might be working with. .... Research wise, The top US institutions may get more research $ ... haven't done an actual search on that. Just a hunch on the US economy and access to financial market $ in general.Hagoromo wrote: ↑Sun Feb 02, 2025 6:10 pmI just wanted to get your opinions on whether you think doing a PhD in the US is better than in the UK. Great point. However, what happens if you are not really sure where you want to work? I guess that in that sense the US universities are somewhat safer. I also feel like there are many more conferences and research activities in the US.
