Should I be worried?

Post by path » Wed Feb 08, 2012 6:44 pm

Hi,

I just saw on the GF that there were many ppl who had been accepted or rejected from Brown and Cornell. I, on the other hand, have not heard back from either yet. I don't know what to make of this? Any ideas as to why this might be?

Thanks!

Schools tend to accept and reject in batches. The fact that you haven't heard back yet just means that your application didn't stand out as particularly good or bad among the rest of the pile. If you look at last year's Gradcafe results, you'll see that Cornell (Pure Math) sent out waves of decisions every week or two.

The good balances out the bad here. No need to be worried yet.

But, but, but....

Heh, I'm trying to say this to myself too. It sometimes works.

I got an offer from Brown today, but have not heard back from Cornell. The Brown email says that "The Brown University mathematics department admissions committee has reviewed all 257 applications to our PhD program.", and they have recommended 23 applicants for acceptance.

Did they email you, or did you check the website?

I just checked the website, and it still says: A decision has not yet been made.

Should I go ahead and email them about my statuss, or wait a few more days?

In general, is it better to be waitlisted, or not receive an answer yet?

Well the language of Brown's email doesn't leave me with too much hope for an acceptance, and I'd imagine that the wait-listed applicants have already been notified.

I don't know about Cornell.

That was me, and I only got the email several hours ago. (i.e. after your previous post)

Also, from looking at last year's results, it looks like NYU spreads out the admits over the course of almost 2 weeks, so they're probably not done yet.
