Funding at UW-Madison?

Post by zoey389 » Thu Mar 01, 2012 6:44 pm

Hi,
Has anyone heard anything about funding from UW-Madison? Or maybe they wait to see who shows up at the recruitment day?
I might email them to ask.

I have not gotten a financial offer yet either. I have checked my my.wisc account and it looks like there's some bureaucracy holding it up. Either way if you are coming to Madison for the visit day I'm sure we'll find out by then.

Ah, perfect timing. They just sent an email to everyone saying that the offers will be coming in the mail.

Is anyone confused about the financial package that Wisconsin-Madison is giving out?

In the main acceptance letter, it says that I am being offered a "Teaching Assistant at the 50% Level" and a Chancellor's Opportunity Award of $2,000.

On the financial sheet it sys that the stipend for 50% teaching is between $14k and $16k. This seems quite small, since U-Michigan Ann Arbor offered me $25k

Do we also receive the "Graduate School University Fellowship," which is 18.7k for the academic year ( and $22.4k annual)?

I got the same offer. It doesn't look like we're being given a fellowship, just a TAship. I think UW is really poor (they've been dealing with a lot of political turmoil/budget cuts recently), and the math department has a lot of mouths to feed. They might offer people more money after the visit day, I don't know. For what it's worth, I'm living in Madison now, and it's a wonderful place, probably nicer than Ann Arbor (although I'm biased), and inexpensive (if you look carefully for housing).

The offer is a 50% teaching appointment plus a 2000 lump sum payable at the end of the first year.
This works out to a total of just over 16000, but then there are 1000 dollars worth of fees that you'll have to pony up too.
Madison is pretty cheap (see craigslist to get an idea of how much rent will run), but I have other more than acceptable choices which have offered me much better financial packages even taking into account the cost of living. I am not ruling it out, but unless I fall in love, I am fairly likely to decline. Perhaps I will see some of you in Madison on Tuesday.

I don't know why UW is so cheap this year.... 14k TA + 2k later for the first year is just....unacceptable....Cornell offered me twice as much as what UW offered in terms of financial....

Ithaca is super expensive though. I agree with other posters that you have to take the cost of living into account when evaluating financial aid offers.

I posted here a while ago, but my opinion has changed a bit: $14,000 is pathetic, and unlike every other math program in the country, summer support is far from a given. tread carefully.
