GRE Math Subject Test on April

Post by ghjk » Sat Apr 21, 2012 8:47 pm

I just took the official test today, and felt it was harder than the practice test (Princeton Review book). Right now, I estimate my score is around 56-59, which is pretty low:P. Anw, how did everyone feel about this test? And do you know how to convert the raw score(e.g: 56-59) to the actual scaled score? Will the scaled score vary based on on how other people did, assume we all took the same test booklet?

I took the test today as well and definitely thought it was harder than the practice exams I took (including the one in the Princeton Review). I felt like I skipped a lot more questions than I normally did on my practice tests. I'm kinda scared to see how I did  aahhh I'm so bad at taking tests it's not even funny...

It was definitely harder than any released exam or the princeton review one. Several of the calculation-heavy questions were particularly irritating. I feel good about my performance, but I am VERY curious as to how the raw-to-scaled score interplay will turn out...

Of course, any standardized test seems harder than its associated practice tests on the day of doom, but I actually do feel that this one was a step up from all the released materials I had seen.

@aaroncraig+3ig3nv3ct0r: I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who felt that way:) Can you guys be more specific as how you guys did(e.g: estimated raw score?)? Btw, how do we find out about the raw score-scaled score conversion table of the Math Subject test?

I left 16 blank, feeling quite comfortable with the ones I did answer. Without getting into particulars, I felt blindsided by a few of the questions at the end. I think a retake is definitely on my radar screen; luckily I'm a sophomore and this is a viable option. I'm even considering cancelling my score, though my curiosity will probably get the better of me. I hope that the perceived difficulty of this test will be reflected in the corresponding score percentiles.

Do you not have to cancel your score at the time of the testing, before the result is released to you?

I answered ~58/66 and feel confident I answered at least 45 correctly. I think I got lucky on several educated guesses, so I guess I'm hoping for 75th-Percentile or better... but who knows

After reading the ETS page, I guess not. Oh well.

Hi Guys,
I hopefully answered 54/66 correct and left the rest. It was too hard as I tried some other ETS samples and my performance was around 850!!! I do not whether they use any scale or curve for the scores or not? I really worry!

In my test, I answered only on 51 question (with at least one mistake that I know of) and got 860 - 91%. So 54/66 sounds good.

Hello,
Are you sure? My plan was being admitted in ICES UT-Austin or ICME Stanford, and I incredibly worry to miss it! Have you taken last this GRE exam held in April?

Regardless of moral implication and/or trolling, here's another way to see why doing this makes you a stupid person.

Between 11 people and 3 weeks, you took the math gre. Estimating 10 hours a week gives a total of 330 man-hours to take the test. Other test takers were given 2.5. So, you performed the test in at least 100 times as many man-hours as other test takers.

Then, if you scored in the 99th percentile, each of you, on average, has a math ability greater than 1/100th of 98% of the population and less than 1/100th of 2% of the population.

If math ability were directly related to IQ, you would have an average IQ of < 2. So you should be very very proud, because the fact that you can use a computer is quite impressive. You are very *special*.

Even if you only spent about 30min each on the six problems. You would have used 11*.5 + 2.5 = 8 man-hours = ~3 times the allowed time. Giving you an IQ of < 50. Still too dumb!
