Undergrad Institution: Ivy
Major(s): Math, Music
Minor(s): none
GPA: 3.87
Type of Student: White, Domestic

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 170 (99%)
V: 168 (95%)

TOEFL Score: n/a

Program Applying: Pure Math (Geometry/Topology or Geometric Group Theory)

Research Experience: 1 REU, continuing as senior thesis
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Dean's List
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: none math-y
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: I met one of the profs at Brandeis, who was very encouraging
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: Ugh, I only started taking grad courses this year, so didn't have grades in them when I applied

Applying to Where: (hlep why did I apply to ALL FOUR OF THESE jesus)
Harvard - PhD / Rejected via email after I sent my fall grades ohohoho (2/24/15)
Yale - PhD / Rejected (4/7/15)
Princeton PhD / Rejected (1/22/15)
MIT - PhD / Rejected (2/11/15)
UPenn - PhD / Never heard from (4/3/15)
Brandeis - PhD / Waitlisted (3/12/15) -- Declined (4/3/15)
Tufts - PhD / Accepted! (2/11/15) -- Going! (4/3/15)
SUNY Stony Brook - PhD / Accepted! (1/26/15) -- Declined (4/3/15)

NDSEG - Rejected (4/2/15)

I'm at this point most confident about Brandeis and Tufts. If I end up doing this over again, maybe I should, like, not apply to the trinity.

EDIT: Wow now I feel much more confident! This is such a rollercoaster ride

1) I will almost surely - in the rigorous sense - attend Washington to work with a particular associate of my current adviser. I will wait around to be rejected by Berkeley to remind myself that I'm just human, because I am psyched to be going to Washington =P

2) It's "withdrawal", not "withdrawl." Don't make that typo. Like I did. In the titles of 5 e-mails.   6.0 writing, what a joke!

Thanks guys!

PS- Washington told me the 2/23 date was the first round, but I see a couple people on here with 2/12. Is that early admit, or fellowship, or was I second round (which I don't mind at all)?

Hi, I am just wondering when you recieved the admission from Louisiana? I also applied there and they changed this application system, and I know that they send the results in the beginning of February? Did they send an email to you, or phone call? Thank you ((:

I actually applied to LSU for the Spring semester but deferred admission to the fall for financial reasons.

Going to a small school without much in the way of graduate math advising, I have found this website quite helpful, and now want to return the favor.

Undergrad Institution: Liberal arts with small math department
Major(s): Mathematics & Studio Art
Minor(s):
GPA: 3.936 (4.0 in math)
Type of Student: Domestic white female

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 165 (95%)
V: 168 (95%)
W: 3.5 (38%) Hahahahaha... I hadn't researched beforehand that the GRE graders actually prefer incomprehensible writing to clear, concise arguments.
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 710 (63%) I was sad. I was very sad.

Program Applying: Pure math. I highlighted abstract algebra, Lie theory, and a budding interest in differential topology.

Research Experience: Two REUs plus my senior thesis. One REU (in symplectic geometry but actually in combinatorics) was at a very prestigious university and kicked me in the butt (hence I didn't have the advisor from this one as a letter writer), but we got a paper out of it that we've submitted. Second REU (in topological graph theory) was at a less prestigious place but I contributed a lot and have submitted a paper from it. The senior thesis (on Lie algebras) is still in the works so I didn't write much about it. I've done various conference talks regarding each project.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Dean's List, a scholarship from high school, a couple minor awards, some art awards too, good Putnam score sophomore year
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Tutor since sophomore year
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: Although it wouldn't seem like it from my GRE writing score, I am an excellent writer, so if schools get past the numbers and actually read my statements, I'll be in a good place. The two letter writers from my school think I'm the bee's knees and I think the letter writer from my most recent REU thinks highly of me. I was a club president junior year and learned a lot about "cat herding" institutional work. I've taken three independent studies.

Applying to What/Where:
NSFGRFP Rejected VG/VG, VG/G, VG/VG Not too bad for the first time around.
University of Michigan, Ann Arbor Rejected 4/14
University of Wisconsin-Madison Admitted 2/13 I'm so happy right now. Declined

GPA: 3.91 (4.00 in math except for one class)

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 163 (86%)
V: 170 (99%)
W: 5.0 (93%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 780 (77%)

Program Applying: Pure Math, PhD

Research Experience: Worked on two separate research projects with faculty at UVA, one for two summers and one over about two years. Didn't publish, but both wrote me letters. One was in topological combinatorics, one was in applied probability.
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Departmental award in math (and one in economics), various GPA-based awards
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Worked as a tutor and grader for several semesters
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: Took three grad classes. Unfortunately got a B in one. Got a letter from one of the instructors (whose class I got an A in)
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: Berkeley and UCLA wanted a "background statement" different from their personal statement, so I wrote something about why I love math. I don't know if they took it seriously, but I did get in to both, so take that as you will.

Applying to Where: I ran into impostor syndrome at the end of last year and was convinced I wouldn't get in anywhere, so I probably applied to too many places, but things worked out so it's fine. This list is ordered by application deadline.
Stanford - Rejected (early January)
Berkeley - Accepted, will attend (Feb 9)
MIT - Rejected (early February)
Princeton - Rejected (late January)

Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: I finished my undergraduate degree three years ago (I started a PhD in Mathematics in my country in areas related to CS; total regret), and that hurts my chances.

Applying to where: These are all PhD in Mathematics programs (ordered by increasing probability of being accepted)

Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Under Grad - Young engineer of the year, National scholarship to visit NYU
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: TA at NYU
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: 2 extremely famous recommenders one from NYU and other Columbia. One seminar talk on my work.
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: Only 2-3 years of formal mathematics education and independent research.

Columbia: Accepted - withdrew
Wisconsin-Madison : Accepted - withdrew
Brown: Accepted - withdrew
UPenn: Accepted - withdrew
Univ Southern California: Accepted - Attending
Stony Brook: Accepted - withdrew[/color
Yale: accepted off waitlist- withdrew

Now might come as a surprise why I choose USC, but after consistent thought I want to continue doing K-theory and Motivic cohomology. other schools which have much higher repute per say do not have people doing exactly what i have been working on. Was hoping for Chicago or UCLA but meh
USC has 2 fantastic geometers - Eric Freidlander and Aravind Asok doing K - theory and close to UCLA which gives good activity in that area.
Its a decision which has been extremely hard to take. but now i am done and happy i guess! Also I have a 2 body issue and need to be in a big city like LA, or NYC or Philly for my gf to get employed . (detroit is not really doing very well)

Review:
In hindsight, I applied to too many schools. Honestly, I had no idea if I'd get accepted any where since I was from such a small school. My advice would be to take the math subject GRE seriously. I took it once and without studying. My score reflected this fact, and every school which required the MGRE rejected me . I don't think this was a coincidence :D .

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 170 (98%)
V: 145 (25%)
W: 3.5 (35%)

My question is do I have to make another test to be admitted with applied mathematics. I still dont have the score from my subject test. Is 145 too low ?
