People who got into Ohio State - how did you hear about funding? Was it part of the official email from OSU, or separate, from the department?

The math department sent me an email saying I was accepted. In the email was information about funding from TAship.

The details of the two MIT acceptances posted on gradcafe seem to match with those of two Yale acceptances posted on Jan 16. Well then :(

Looks like Georgia Tech is beginning to send out offers, according to GradCafe. Of course, I haven't heard back yet.

Georgia Tech and Penn State are sending out admission results! Got official results from Georgia Tech, while someone from Penn State emailed stating admission was likely. :o

Yeah I agree, that was definitely dickish on my part and I apologize to everyone who felt any form of stress from my actions. I was pretty pissed about my breakup and stressed about applications so both together do not go so well.

I was super gloomy today after I heard that Georgia Tech sent out emails. Then I just got an unofficial letter from Rutgers. They said they will send me an official letter in few days if I am still interested. This might be my first acceptance! Suddenly became so happy!

That’s great news.

I think I feel gloomy now. I thought my application would be competitive at georgi tech or uiuc. I think my letters were weaker than I imagined.

I didn't apply for schools this cycle, but I'm definitely sweating, so I'll post in this thread. I'm a student in an okay master's program studying graph theory. I'll be applying for PhD programs next year, and I would really like to get into a high ranking school. My undergraduate record is pretty mediocre, but I'm doing quite well in graduate school, and I should be able to get A's as well as a very high mGRE score. I'm also working on quite a bit of research.

I really want to ask "How many papers do I need to publish in order to get into a high ranking school?" but I know that publication is about quality, not quantity. Despite this, if I push out a few decent publications in graph theory (nothing phenomenal, but improvements and generalizations of previous results), can I dream of maybe going to a top 10 school? I get the feeling that one small mistake can kill your chances with places like Princeton or MIT, but people say that research is the one of the most important parts of your application, so I'd really like to know if I have a chance of overcoming my past mistakes by doing good research. I feel that research in graph theory is easier to come up with than it is for other fields, so I'd really like to know if there's an amount that's considered to be "good enough" or if there's some kind of standard that I can meet to make myself competitive.

I'd really appreciate anyone's advice, because the future makes me anxious. Thanks!

Well, like you said it depends on the quality of your research. If you are the single author on a paper that gets published in a place like Duke or Adv. in Math. or better, then I would say you'd have a pretty damn good chance regardless of your GPA. If you are a joint author of a paper that gets published in, say, Ann. Comb. or below, then you probably still need everything you'd imagine you'd need to get into a place in the top 10 -- near perfect gpa, +85% mGRE, decent putnam score, etc. But getting into a top 10 program is neither necessary nor sufficient for becoming a mathematician.

Also, on the other hand, top 10 places accept people with no published papers. Getting good recs from well respected people who can comment on your ability to perform research (even if you don't have a paper submitted) is probably just as good.

Thanks a lot for the feedback. What if I'm a single author of a paper that gets published in, say, Discrete Mathematics?

I'm sure any result published in any reputable journal (not one where you have to pay to submit) will be seen as a positive, and certainly better than no research/publications. If your result is in a subfield in which a faculty member at a place your applying to works, it'll be even better.

I did this. Still haven't heard anything.
Look, I'm not saying that this is completely wrong. Any research experience could be helpful for the phd application. I just don't believe any faculty member -- in pure mathematics -- would specifically request that a student be admitted for research purposes. Math professors are super picky about the people they work with.
Neither do I think the admissions committee would believe that you will continue doing research in the same subfield and work with the desired professor.

Hi all, I was the one who posted the first MIT acceptance on the grad cafe, and yes it was real! As far as I know, all of the Berkeley posts were fake, as Berkeley hasn't sent out any real offers yet to my knowledge.

Do you think it's a good news to receive a waitlist at this early time or not? I've also got one from another school.

Sounds about the same as the one they sent me. Oh, well. I ended up applying to 16 schools so even in the best case scenario I was probably gonna get a few rejections. Best of luck with all your other apps!

I believe your applicant profile is much stronger than mine and maybe you mentioned other better schools that they expected you to get into. I played it safe when they ask which schools I applied to.

I still haven’t heard from Oregon. Is this a good sign? Yesterday there were 2 rejections only on gradcafe. Today there are 2 acceptances only (so far). Or am I waitlisted? :?

You would apply again next year. First you need to identify the weak points of your application file. If you had a low GRE score, studying hard and getting a higher score would help. Second, you would want to apply to lower-ranked schools. If you applied to top 50 schools this admission round, try to apply to rank 50-100 schools. You can apply to, of course, some top 50 schools that you didn’t apply in the first round.

This actually happened to me last year so I really put a lot of emphasis on boosting my profile. I studied for the mGRE (score didn't go up  ), applied for REUs and got into one so I got research experience, and broadened my courses. I didn't get into any top 40 school I applied to last year but I've had some luck this year :) .
