UW Madison math department
Can anybody tell me about the math department at UW-Madison. I just got off the waitlist. I am interested in number theory. I have heard that overall its a very strong school.

For number theory, it is excellent (easily top ten); Jordan Ellenberg, Simon Marshall, and Melanie Matchett Wood are all big names.

Don't forget Nigel Boston.

Department is good obviously. Top 20 and usually top 15. Department is pretty big and the top floor has a really pretty view of Madison. I think analysis (particularly harmonic analysis) and number theory are it's strongest areas. Melanie Wood is actually leaving and going to Berkeley I believe. She may not even be there in the Fall, but I'm not 100% sure. Otherwise Jordan Ellenberg is Jordan Ellenberg obviously + others mentioned. They have a small issues with students struggling on the quals, but apparently it's getting better. The algebra qual is easier now than it use to be. The students who do well seem to get pretty good post docs. I heard Michigan, Berkeley, and MIT as some of the schools some of the upcoming graduates got post docs at.teji271095 wrote:Can anybody tell me about the math department at UW-Madison. Thank you for your reply. I just wanted to get an overview of the department. Indeed its very strong in number theory and algebra. Melanie wood is leaving but from what I heard, they are getting some excellent new hires in the fall.
