phd matching school

Post by zcahxy0 » Mon Aug 12, 2019 9:02 pm

My interest field is PDE, numerical analysis, particularly numerical solution of pde and dynamic system, since i have backgroud in CS, so computational math track could be a choice.
I wish i can get some advice for a program list (matching schools), thanks!

Undergrad Institution: Liberal arts college
Major: Mathematics
Minor: Computer Science
GPA: 3.80/4.0
Type of Student: international asian Male

GRE:
Q: 169 (96%)
V: 158 (80%)
W: 3.5
Math Subject Test: 780 (75%) (2018 Oct)

Program Applying: Mathematics Ph.D.(US) or masters (canada)

Research Experience: fractional pde, stochastic equation, some combinatorics, fourier analysis and orthogonal polynomials
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Dean's List, scholarships, 7th place on a math challenge out of 71 teams
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: TA for a few semesters, currently working on thesis, passed an acturary exam; chess club president, math honor society vp, do not have REU but spend one semester in UCL,did a decent job.

reach:
U toronto (master)
U Waterloo (applied master)
Brown (phd applied)

sort of reach:
UBC (master)
Mcgill (master)
Washington seattle

match:
UIUC (phd)
Georgia tech
ohio state (phd)
CU boudler (phd)
Alberta (master)

safety (is this safe at all?):
Emory (comptational track)
U of southern california (phd)
U of victoria (master)

Honestly, i am not sure if this list fits best, as i did not investigate much safety options and my previous application indicates this whole process is filled with uncertainty anyway;

How do you guys think of this list? is this realistic? do you guys have other ideal programs? appreciate it!

What area you're looking to study in grad school? Anything specific? Also, you might want to put soke reach, low reach schools in your list as well and which schools would fit into that, would largely depend on your area of interest.

Your "safety" schools don't seem so safe.

Emory is tiny, gets hundreds of applications for 5-7 spots. Utah rejects applicants like you just as much as they accept them. Iowa may indeed be a safety, but that's not certain.
