Application Review: Nondomestic Student

Post by jdjake » Tue Nov 12, 2019 4:52 pm

Hi, I'm a Canadian student with a Master's degree in mathematics seeking a PHD degree in Euclidean harmonic analysis. I was hoping the kind people on this forum would be able to review my profile.

Undergrad Institution: Public Canadian University, Computing Science Degree (University of Alberta)
Master's Institution: Public Canadian University, Mathematics Degree (University of British Columbia)
Major(s): Mathematics and Physics
Minor(s):
GPA: Essentially a 4.0 in math.
GRE Revised General Test:
V: 162 (90%)
Q: 170 (96%)
W: 5.5 (98%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: 930 (98%)

TOEFL Score: NA

Program Applying: Pure Math PHD

Research Experience: I have done an undergraduate research project with a computing science professor on combinatorial optimization. No published research, but we came up with some results that he is still working on. In my master's degree, I have published one research paper, and another expository paper in a student journal. I plan to submit a second research paper shortly. I have also presented at about 3-4 conferences in the past year, and won an award for a poster at one of these conferences.

Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Research Award for funding.
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Math & Physics Tutor.
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: One recommendation is from a computing science professor (theoretical computing science though, two recommendations from my co-supervisors.

Applying to Where:

The University of Edinburgh
The University of Madison Wisconsin
The University of Chicago
The University of Pennsylvania
MIT

Any advice is appreciated :)

Your stats look great, but given no publications, I'd add more "safety" schools?

Have you considered applying to Purdue? Trevor Wooley was just hired this year and I believe he came from Edinburgh.
