Do I stand a shot?

Post by AspiringMath » Mon Dec 23, 2019 10:35 pm

Hello guys I'm a current PhD student who just finished his first semester. I am not too fond of the research being done at my current institution and am adamant on transferring. I applied to three schools, but I'm not sure how realistic of a shot I have, and if I should prepare starting now to attempt another round of applications next year in case this one goes bad. Last year I applied to 15 programs and got rejected from 12. What do you all think?

Undergrad Institution: Small unknown state school

Doctoral Institution: Relatively decent applied math school, somewhat well known
Major(s): Applied Mathematics
GPA: 3.85

Type of Student: Domestic minority male

GRE Revised General Test:
Q: 165 (88%)
V: 157 (76%)
W: 5.0 (93%)
GRE Subject Test in Mathematics:
M: Terrible, only took once and didn't get a chance to take again. Only submitted to one school.

Program Applying: Mostly applied mathematics

Research Experience: Two research projects, one publication
Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Departmental awards and scholarships, 2-3 awards for poster presentations
Pertinent Activities or Jobs: TA for 2 semesters, tutor for 6 semesters
Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: Should have one or two strong letters, applying with 14 graduate courses
Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: Current PhD student? Not sure if that counts for anything. Know how to code.

Dream schools:
NYU Courant
Columbia - Applied Physics and Math
