Hi (name),

Congratulations! Our faculty in the University of Texas Mathematics PhD program have asked me to extend to you to a warm invitation to our 2020 Graduate Recruitment Open House.

The event will be held on campus, in our offices (Robert L. Moore Hall), as follows:

Tuesday, March 24th

10am - 4pm
This is the first bit of the email I received. If the tickets are nonrefundable, you might reach out to them and see if they can arrange an alternative visit. For what it's worth they're only providing $250 for 'travel expenses', so keep that in mind.

Anyone else waiting to hear anything from UCSD and/or Irvine? Both schools have already sent their first wave of offers and it seems that they have already sent a few rejections. Does this mean the rest of us are waitlisted?

Just out of curiosity, I looked up your profile and it says you got into UIC. Why are you sweating over UofU if you have an offer from UIC?

Nah! It just means few of us are waitlisted which we will know soon while majority of us will get rejections shortly

I got waitlisted for UC Irvine and ranked 8th out of 33. What is my chance of receiving an offer?
Wish other schools would give the rank on the waitlist... I got "you have a strong file" and a few words of encouragement. I would say it depends a lot on the size of their incoming class, like if its fewer than ten then ehhh, but if it's over 15 I'd stay hopeful. Either way it's a bit of a crap-shoot (I feel like even with emailing profs/checking gradcafe/this forum we're still constantly in the dark), like this whole process!! Might be worth letting the grad admissions coordinator know that you're excited to be on the waitlist/the potential of going to Irvine.

You think it's better to be on a waitlist with more people than one with fewer people?

kansas probably means it's better to be on a waitlist for a school with a bigger entering class.
Honestly, the whole waitlist thing is really opaque. How deep a school goes into their waitlist is going to depend on a huge number of factors. The bottom line is that you just don't know unless they tell you their process is basically over.

ah, that makes a lot more sense!

and yes, I am sure there are other factors involved. I imagine a waitlist spot at a place like Duke is less meaningful than one at Michigan State, for example. Both great schools, but my guess is Duke gets a higher yield rate on their offers than MSU

I've heard UofU is better in AG/CA than UIC, and I would like to go into acdemia, so I prefer UofU over UIC.
But I think I might change my mind in several days now that I find it too dark for me to wait.
What's your opinion of UofU and UIC?

As a current fourth-year undergraduate at Utah, I can say that we have great groups working on AG, CA, and NT. We also have people working on rep. theory. AG/CA RTG recently also got a grant from NSF so it's nice.

As for SLC, it's not Boston or Seattle, but I think one could find most or everything he needs. Also if you're into outdoors then it's a good place to live.

Are they using that RTG for grad fellowships? My impression is that they were funding a lot of auxiliary activities but not getting people out of teaching.

Oh my god I just flew through SLC for the first time and could not believe those MOUNTAINS right up against the city. It's very beautiful.

It’s very stupid that they give people open ended offers until the nationwide deadline April 15. If someone needs 4 months to decide...

Speaking for myself, the NSF GRFP announces results in early April. It’s hard for me to make an completely informed decision until then (although I have a clear top choice).

I declined an offer directly to the Math department a few weeks ago, and the graduate school just emailed me with more information in one of those "You're accepted, this is why you should come to XYZ" emails.

Do you guys think I should reach out to someone else to decline? The DGS for math emailed me back after I declined, so he definitely saw it, but I don't want to have no formally removed myself from consideration.

Any suggestions?

It’s probably just an automated email. They likely just haven’t gotten around to taking you off the list yet. As long as you have record of your email to the math department declining their offer, there’s nothing you need to worry about.

does anyone know if UC Davis has a waitlist? I sent an email to grad admissions director asking if there was an unofficial waitlist or if I should start considering other programs and he just said that they had already sent out all their admits :?

I heard no news from there. Do you mean that I will receive a rejection soon or be rejected with nothing? Or they just sent all their admits in the first wave?

Hoping he just meant they’ve sent out the first wave... looks like they’ve done official waitlists in the past, but I haven’t heard any news about it this round.

They told me end of February or early March. Since they responded to the applied math applications last week, I think they might respond to pure math apps this week!

I was told Dartmouth was a place that rejects anyone bellow 50% percentile GRE. I know one school in the 50's US news ranking does it. Seems like its dartmouth.
