They have sent out the first round offers. I'm pretty sure of this.

By the way, will waitlisted people get screwed due to the coronavirus? I'm kind of scared if schools would be hesitant to do second rounds because of it.

I seriously doubt it. But I am worried about the delay it will cause.

I go to CUNY Hunter college as an undergrad. The CUNY system is crazy today because our governor just announced our classes will be online. You should Probably expect some sort of delay over the next few days because the schools have a lot to deal with right now. Although I’m not at the Graduate Center, I think all CUNYs are probably struggling to adjust.

Just email the grad coordinator Ara about your app status. He is a nice guy and he will tell you what your status is.

Well I am just speculating, but I feel like all of this must cause some sort of delay. My biggest fear is that it will cause some schools to push decisions past April 15. But then again, you might be right and they just decide to reject everyone on waitlists in order to keep the April 15 deadline

Really sweating now. USC cancelled their visit day today and gave no mention of reimbursing the non-refundable costs incurred when planning the trip. I emailed them about it and they seem to be hesitant. I cannot take on the $550+ cost of that trip. I would have visited and risked getting sick before paying it myself.
You should be able to get the airfare back for no charge. I know that American Airlines and United are waiving their usual $200+ change fee for at least the month of March, and I assume other airlines are following suit. Though it's worth noting that some airlines only offer refunds in the form of travel vouchers (which often expire after a year).

As for hotel and other associated costs, you should call the establishment(s) and ask for a full refund. If any amount does not get refunded, you should endlessly hound USC until they fully reimburse you.
The change fee is just to switch the flight. That would be a wonderful option if I had any other foreseeable travel. Unfortunately, at this time I do not. But I will definitely try to call the hotel. Thank you for the advice.

USC is saying they will pay "cancellation fees" but not the full cost, of course there are no cancellation fees. I booked basic economy for everything since I wanted to spend as little of their money as possible, so that makes refunds more difficult.
Which airline did you use? Most airlines will let you cancel without paying a fee, and they will give you a travel voucher for the full amount. At least for United and American Airlines, you don't have to immediately re-book the flight; you can hold onto the voucher until you have new travel plans (though the voucher will expire eventually).

Either way, vouchers really suck because your $550 is essentially tied up with the airline until you can travel again. It's a non-liquid asset with an expiration date.

That's the reply I got when I e-mailed them. I was wondering if anyone got an e-mail or something where they were explicitly told they were on a waitlist.

I didn’t receive a waitlist email, but I was accepted to Iowa what seemed like later than others. They still seem to be waiting for people to decline offers to try and send out more acceptances. They had a visit scheduled for the end of March, but that has been canceled. :(

I've seen some acceptances for penn state but no rejections/waitlist. Does anyone know if they are still sending out acceptances or waiting for a second round?

Several of us have sent emails to them. I have not received a reply yet and it's been about a week. Another person on here hasn't gotten a reply yet either.

Ok thanks for the info. There have been relatively few posts on Gradcafe (5 or 6) so its possible they're just overwhelmed.

I don't think they were done as of several days ago. My son was trying to decline the acceptance he got, and e-mailed them. They answered by saying, basically, wait, let me extend that offer on the website do that you can go there and click "decline". That tells me they were not fully done, like they sent letters, may be not all of them, but didn't update the web site yet.

I feel like emailing one of the graduate directors of a school I'm waitlisted at; however, the only other person who has done it has got a rude rejection message from that person. Should I do it? I really hate how some schools are so bad at communication. Some schools are really great though.

I haven't spoken or emailed with the graduate directors at any of the schools I applied to, but I have reached out to graduate coordinators at three schools. They have all been very nice and as helpful as they could be. I find phone calls more effective than emails, btw.

Almost the same situation.

Ladies and gentlemen, If you were accepted by the pure math program of university of Arizona and have another option, please decline. I currently have no offers out of 16 applications.

I'm expecting some... weird yield rates this year, due to all the open house cancellations. I'm expecting a noticably higher yield rate for campuses that actually held their open houses, and a correspondingly lower rate for those that did not manage to do so. It'll be an interesting test case to see how much effect the open houses really have. (Although in some cases it might boost yield rates for schools with more negative environments)

So, to engage in a bit of speculation, I think if you're waitlisted at a school that had a cancelled open house, you may have a (slightly?) better than normal chance of getting in.

So far they're the only department which NEVER replied to any email from me. Everybody else was courteous enough to at least acknowledge the message. This is after they charged me $50 for so called "international credentials evaluation" in addition to the usual application fee.

Though they haven't said anything like that, I know a couple of people who have already accepted offers and a guy who got off the waitlist. So maybe UIC is unlikely to send out more offers.

What? Really? Did you try reaching thier director of studies? He's a great guy and almost replies immediately or within a day. I'm actively in touch with grad office too due to a problem with my transcripts and they have been very helpful. I don't know why they are not responding to you.

I can’t speak for that school, but most schools have administrative coordinators for graduate school and they prefer you to communicate with them.

I have emailed the grad head at some schools and they have been nice with me; for example, the graduate cord at the graduate center (Ara) is a nice guy and was willing to tell me my status.

It probably means you got rejected. Stony Brook doesn't waitlist and they don't really accept anyone after rejections go out.
Joyous day. *sigh*
You may be considered for master program. I got one a few days ago.

Well, more like anyone heard if they are going to do another round or something?
So far they're the only department which NEVER replied to any email from me. Everybody else was courteous enough to at least acknowledge the message. This is after they charged me $50 for so called "international credentials evaluation" in addition to the usual application fee.
What? Really? Did you try reaching thier director of studies? He's a great guy and almost replies immediately or within a day. I'm actively in touch with grad office too due to a problem with my transcripts and they have been very helpful. I don't know why they are not responding to you.
Yeah, I wrote to Professor Chesdikov too.

It probably means you got rejected. Stony Brook doesn't waitlist and they don't really accept anyone after rejections go out.
Joyous day. *sigh*
You may be considered for master program. I got one a few days ago.
Was offered an unfunded masters, but can't help but take that as just a soft rejection.

Yeah, I wrote to Professor Chesdikov too.
I emailed their director of graduate study (Professor Chesdikov), and also associate director of graduate study (Professor Madden) about 5 times, but they never replied to my email. Finally, I got a very rude rejection from Professor Chesdikov saying "Unfortunately your application has been denied".Image

So the question is. Did they reject you for inquiring or did they reject you because you were actually rejected but not informed?
It is a really terrible thing for a school to have rejected someone and not inform them In a timely manner.
