Is this time to let go of OSU?

Post by crystal_math » Wed Jan 13, 2021 8:14 pm

If we have have not heard back, does this mean we are probably rejected? Gradcafe gives the impression that more people are accepted early January than mid feb (if at all). OSU's site says that, after initial screening, apps are divided into two evaluated in January and February. Personally, I have been told by the program coordinator that "I will most likely hear on Mid to Late Feb". So given this, time to give up on OSU? Please don't sugarcoat this.

I haven't heard back as well, but I know 2 other people in my school that have *arguable* better stats (one with IMO medal/Putnam honorable mentions, more publications; the other with national scholarship and publications) than I do but didn't hear back yet. I think we can't assume anything this year basing off from the departments' behaviors in previous years.

One other thing to note is that it seems that ( I might be wrong) the batch of offers yesterday are all sent out to international students. maybe OSU divides domestic/international applicants into different round of decisions.

Looking at past years here and on gradcafe, it looks like OSU might make offers in batches. For example, this year it seems a few went out in December, more on 12 Jan and another set on 15 Jan, assuming these reports aren't trolls, anyway. Many schools make additional offers later once enough in the original rounds of offers have rejected or withdrawn. Last year, OSU math had 331 completed applications, made 81 offers and enrolled 19 of those. This year with the pandemic, who knows. Unless you received a rejection or negative waitlist letter, I wouldn't give up on any school until the end of March. Good luck all!

https://dataviz.rae.osu.edu/t/public/vi ... Admissions

Many public schools publish similar stats but not always in the same format and not always easy to find for public view. A few elite privates do also. Some publish them behind a login so if you know a student or faculty at that school you might be able to get access.

I hate to break it, but Gradcafe shows a waitlist from OSU.

Is it not too early for this? How do we verify this?

Waitlist does not necessarily mean all offers have been issued. It might, but it could also mean that particular applicant was borderline. Plus, gradcafe is sus now. I wouldn't believe any of it at this point.
