how do they decide 2nd and 3rd wave? Do people from 1st wave end up declining the offer straightway? you have time till 4/15 so why decide now till you get all others. it would be great if someone can help with how the college decides to send subsequent offers till they get declines?

thanks,

You can sit on your offers until 4/15 but it is seen as ethical to decline other offers as soon as you have made a decision. Also, that is what waitlists are for.

I totally understand but what I am trying to understand when most of the offers are just getting started where one has maybe a couple of offers and people are talking 2nd round.

thanks,

Thanks for the info. Anw, do you know if those offers are from applied or pure maths?
I'm an applied math applicant, but not sure about the others
Are you a domestic applicant?
yes, I'm domestic

I am an international (US degree) in pure math. I also got in NYU. I believe they don't separate pure and applied programs.

I am an NYU student. FYI, NYU has the fashion of not sending rejections until April. They will send in ealry April (or probably late March) an offer to their MS program if you are rejected by their PhD program. However, they will be sending out more offers, or probably waitlist email later if some people declined or you are waitlisted. So maybe you can poke them later in March about your PhD application if you still haven't heard from them.

Does anyone have news on Brown or Stanford? I keep occasionally seeing "acceptances" show up on GradCafe but fail to tell whether they are real or fake.

I recieved emails from Brown asking if I am still interested in them. I guess it is either shorlist or waitlist. They said official results will come within next week, So maybe the Brown acceptance is true.

They are probably true, but nothing official. I've gotten a unofficial rejection a week ago and there are >1 people in my dept that have gotten unofficial acceptances.

Props to connections.

Do you mind me asking when roughly they sent over those emails? (Also, are we still talking pure mathematics and next week with respect to this week?)

Yes it's pure math program. The email was on Feb.3rd and it said "We are hoping to make our final decisions within the coming week." And according to gradcafe, it seems Brown will send out decisions at the same time with an update on the application portal in previous year. So I guess they will also do it this year? more like undergadatue admission procedure.

Do you mind sharing the name of the faculty that sent the email(s)? I’m thinking of emailing and ask, but don’t know who to. One Professor I am interested in said he did not participate in the admission process, is that an unofficial rejection put in a nice way? Or is it just he truly wasn’t involved in admission?

Thank you for your reply. So is it fair to say as long as we have not gotten an explicit rejection we are still in the running? I know some other top programs send out an early round of offers and if you have not heard back by March you are more or less rejected with only the formality left.

Yes I believe so.

Note that most of us will have more than 1 offer in our hand and some might have >5 before finally committing to one. Schools send out offers based on the assumption that a certain percentage of them will decline their offers, and we can probably assume they do this conservatively, especially this year.

So, I wouldn't count a school out until April 15 unless they specifically rejects you, especially if they are a big program as identified here (this links to AMS).

Also, remember graduate admissions is kind of a crapshoot with some random elements involved. Some school will reject for reasons unknown (redflags?) and some school will not. Every committee hunts for something different. Getting rejected or admitted close to or after April 15 in no way says you are inferior or lesser of a mathematician than others.

Good luck!

It's their departmental email and I think you can find it on their website. However, I would not suggest you send those emails because they are not likely to let you know the result early. I inquire them my chance in the reply and they just say the results will come out soon blabla. And as someone else on this forum said earlier, Brown released all results in the same time in previous years. So I think we will be fine just waiting.

And that is by no means a rejection or anything close. Professors at my school also told me profs out of the committee could do nothing to the results. So I believe it's just the truth .

I can confirm that one of my friend from Peking University in China received an applied math PhD offer from courant.

Lowkey kinda worried I'm not going to be accepted by any of the universities I applied to.

Don't be worried! It's still early :) A lot of admission committees are pushing back notification dates this year. There is always hope until April 15th!

I did an interview with them a few weeks ago and then about a week and a half ago I was told that I had been placed on a waiting list. They told me that they admitted a conservative number of people (less than 10% of their applicants) and were hoping to be able to admit more, if their funding allowed.

Like someone else said, it is still very early! We're really just in the first stage of this admittance period, I think.

I was interviewed by them. I noticed that I and other students interviewed have not heard anything back yet (neither an acceptance nor rejection). I assume soon (weekend? next series of weekdays?) we will hear something.

The Duke DGS told me earlier this week that they "won’t be able to announce admissions decisions before Friday, Feb 12, and possibly not until the week of Feb 15."

The Duke DGS told me earlier this week that they "won’t be able to announce admissions decisions before Friday, Feb 12, and possibly not until the week of Feb 15."
That's interesting, I'm definitely curious why. Nevertheless, thanks for mentioning the update!
I think they're still waiting to know how much funding the department was allocated.
I know that Duke did send out rejections earlier this week

They are still reviewing. The deadline was just three weeks ago. Also FYI they only plan to have a cohort of about 5 people.

That is upsetting to hear, going to consider myself already rejected then. If you don't mind me asking, how do you know they are only taking 5 students?

It's according to the department chair.

Hi, did anyone get an reply from Emory? There is a result on gradcafe. I had an interview last week and they told me they will give out decisions this week.

Anyone knows if Rutgers is done with offers? I got this weird email from Michigan saying offers will be made on a rolling bias something like that but nothing specific as to denial or acceptance what's up with that?

Hi, the Emory one from gradcafe was mine. Got my official letter yesterday. I'm in applied math tho.
