Nice! My alma mater. Not a huge research scene in math there but the dept is filled with some of the most down-to-earth and accomplished professors I've ever met (I transferred). You can tell they truly love it there and many of them are really passionate about teaching, which you can't take for granted. Huge graduate student body as well, lots of events for grad students. Only negative is the housing situation is really really bad. GL, hope you get in!
Thanks for your well wishes! The main draw for me for UCSC was the amount of courses they have on representation theory and Lie Groups/Algebras to be honest.

Hi everyone, first-year UT Austin grad here. I just had a friend text me about admissions and whether I knew anything, and I realized y’all were probably sweating without information too. Here’s what I know:

- Math at UT doesn’t do batch admissions. People get emailed individually once the adcom feels very sure about them. They care a lot about fit here and read applications very carefully
- Decisions here come out on the later side even normally, but like I said, very spread out
- Oden admissions probably have no relationship to the regular math department’s admissions in terms of timeline (just my guess based on what I know about the institute—the grad advisor used the words that it has “its own PhD program,” and the fact that Oden is so interdisciplinary means they probably have a totally different adcom.)
- The field is huge this year. About 450 compared to 350 last year. (For perspective, I think my cohort is 18 people, including 2 actuarial master’s students). This will slow things down
- Major consideration: Texas has been having an icepocalypse—classes have been canceled all last week and half of this week, and I feel pretty sure that no meaningful admissions progress has been happening during this time. Admin focus may continue to be a little diverted while getting things back on track for this semester
- We haven’t been notified of dates for prospective student events yet. Earlier in the month, we were asked for input on how we should run them this year, and then the icepocalypse happened. Just another indication things are still very much in process

tl;dr don’t make assumptions based on last year’s timeline, and be patient! Good luck, everyone!
An update to this: I spoke to our grad coordinator, and she says that they have a lot to do, with offering admission and putting admits in touch with faculty and current students, but that they are working diligently. She says the plan is for the open house to take place the week of March 8th

Ok, NYU update: they said that they made almost all decisions and don’t plan on many more offers. FYI - >600 applications, don’t know much more.
This is very unfortunate if true. Who did you email to get this information?

I got waitlisted at Ohio State! I am honestly gobsmacked- it's the highest ranked program I applied to and I honestly didn't even expect to be considered. It looks like I'm pretty low on it, so not much of a chance, but I am so flattered I could cry. Wishing all of you the best of luck!

It indeed is! E-mailed the person I happened to know and who is on the admission committee.

I applied to Gatech but there is no decision yet. I just logged into the portal and found there is a gtID there. Is this gtID stuff common? Thanks.

Hey guys,
Anyone had any info on umich AIM, Upenn AMCS, or Umaryland?

Wish everyone the best for this odd odd cycle
only two profs at UPenn are taking any students and are only able to fund two new students. I know because I got accepted. I turned it down, so good luck!!
I can verify this because I got their letter as well. But I think the OP is asking about the applied program at Penn and we are talking about pure math.
yeah you're right, my mistake

If you get in you will love Boltje for algebra. He's brilliant and teaches with great foresight and structure. Dong is the resident rep-thst at ucsc and I've only heard praise. I would've applied based on the fantastic selection of faculty alone but there's unfortunately little to no activity there in my proposed field (geometry/topology). Sounds like a great fit for you however, so best of luck!

Would you guys say this year its more competitive than last year due to covid?
Everything I read indicates the trend is more application everywhere and some programs reduce phd offers because concerns of declining undergraduate enrollment or to divert funds to extend current grads and postdocs. When top schools with 10 billion in fund endowment like penn and columbia say they will not invite anyone then admit fewer grad student than normal then I would say more competitive.

I think they maybe slowly uploading the letter one by one. I'm yet to get my rejection and I'm an international too. Anyone else who hasn't been rejected yet?

No rejection, yet. Domestic.

Edit: Perhaps worth mentioning that I applied for the applied track.

They sent out some fellowships in Dec and they said they will review applications that are not nominated for fellowship in February on their website. I will probably email them today.

I wonder if anyone has received official letters from CUNY? I received a email saying I am placed "near top of shortlist" around a month ago but haven't heard anything since.

I got the waitlist email from Ohio State late last week and it's a ranked list. There's 51 students on the list and all I know is that I'm in the first priority group (top 14 students). Does anyone have any idea or guess as to how likely it is to get off the waitlist for a big program like OSU if you're near the top of the list? I'm excited about this news, but I want to be careful about getting my hopes up too high.

Yes, I received the same "near top of shortlist" letter about a month ago. Literally within an hour after that email, I received an email saying that I had been admitted.

"shortlist" means waitlist at CUNY, they (I suppose Ara) will email you again and make an offer if people who currently hold offers decline theirs.

Last year I got an email saying I'm on top of the shortlist, then a few days later another email asking if I'm still interested, then an offer the same day. It may be different this year but I believe the shortlist is ranked and CUNY makes offers as previously made offers are declined. This year they are aiming for an incoming class of 5 due to budget cuts.

Really? I believe in my virtual visit with the department I heard that the incoming class will be roughly 9.

5 was what we were told at the start of the semester, maybe they were able to secure more funding recently (which is a good thing), I've heard this happened in other departments.

I was just accepted to Michigan State (with TA position and a small fellowship). This is around 6 hours after the other acceptances on GradCafe, so it seems rather than send the acceptances out automatically at once they're doing it manually and so could extend into later today/tomorrow/etc. I would recommend giving it a day or two before worrying at all.

There are some posts in grad cafe right now. do you know that they send all offers together? I did not receive an offer. Does it mean I do not have any chance to get direct acceptance?
I was just accepted to Michigan State (with TA position and a small fellowship). This is around 6 hours after the other acceptances on GradCafe, so it seems rather than send the acceptances out automatically at once they're doing it manually and so could extend into later today/tomorrow/etc. I would recommend giving it a day or two before worrying at all.
That is good to know. Are you pure or applied?
Pure, with interests in algebra and number theory.

I poked Stony Brook. Decisions should be sent out on March 12th.

ON March 12th? And all remaining decisions?

Sorry I misquoted them, they said "decisions will be going out about March 12th", so it sounds like they will be sending out waitlist, rejections, and acceptances at around the same time. They also said that the director will generally reach out beforehand to confirm interest.

Last friday UCLA made some rejections through the portal. But they stopped, as I see there are some people who haven't received a rejection yet. Does anyone know anything about that?

I saw some (three) Courant results on GradCafe. I wonder if anyone knows anything about Courant? I haven't received anything, probably means rejection?

Someone on this forum poked them and they said they are mostly done with sending offers. So I guess yes it's likely a rejection if you still not heard anything from them. But you are almost guaranteed to get their master offers if you choose it when applying to PhD. It's their fashion, admitting PhD applicants into non-funded masters.
