Is anyone else still waiting for a decision from Georgia Tech? I wonder if I'm waitlisted and they're just not telling me...lol

Also have not heard from GATech, also a math queen :). Pretty sure it's a vague waitlist. I've been checking often because I know they don't always email but nothing yet.

Yea, for pure. Nah, this was the email I got:

"Dear [My name],

We regret to inform you that you will not be offered admission to the Ph.D. program in Mathematics.

Since the number of students who can be accepted is limited and the overall quality of applicants is very high, it is not possible to accept many excellent students who are interested in coming to Cornell.

We appreciate your interest in Cornell and wish you success in continuing your studies at another university.

The Graduate Admissions Committee"

Has anyone actually been admitted to Cornell, or has it all been rejects so far?

I applied to Dartmouth - have seen some being accepted and some even being waitlisted already, while I haven't heard anything from them.

Does that mean I've been rejected?

Not worried though, I applied only because their fee was waived.

Received a letter like

We are interested in your application, and we would be very happy to make an offer to you. But since the number of offers we can make to foreign students are quite limited this year, I hope to first know where we stands in your consideration for graduate programs, in particular if you were still interested in us.

Hope that means acceptance.

Got an open house invite from Indiana-Bloomington.
Is it generic, or a shortlist?

I applied for the CSE program in the Math department, and I got a response today saying they are still under review

I wish universities like UCLA would declare if their intake of foreign students is going to be quite limited. Seems unethical to collect expensive application fees from foreign students knowing that you can only make "an extremely limited amount of offers".

I'm also international, but I mean UCLA is super competitive, it should be common sense that they make limited amount of offers to foreign students each year. Same goes with all the top tier math schools, they didn't force you to apply.

I have been told, by the DGS at my school and professors at UCLA. That UCLA has had headcount issues for the past few years because they overenrolled too many students (in 2020 and 2021). So sure, UCLA is a very competitive school but to say that their situation is like other private schools (or even public schools like Berkeley and Michigan) is false. If you know your class size is severely reduced and to remedy this you are gonna target a certain demographic of students then I think you should issue a small warning to international students.

Btw, FWIW most private top schools don't really care if you are international or domestic (modulo DEI admissions, but thats not something I want to discuss).

Edit: I am also a domestic applicant, but I do find the way some schools milk international students for stuff like application fees and masters programs abhorrent.

I think since it started "dear applicant" it is probably generic, but I don't think it'll hurt to go.

I still haven’t heard from anywhere applied to about a dozen programs. Right now I’m taking the “no news is good news” mentality but being in the dark still sucks.

Just had my Oxford interview. Most nerve-racking experience in my life. Think I got a hold of myself near the middle and through the end, though; apparently can expect an answer no later than 2 weeks.

There is no acceptance on gradcafe yet. They only sent out a bunch of rejections.

I’ve been seeing some rejections and some people mention acceptances to Cornell for Pure (maybe applied to).

Do they send them out individually instead of in waves? I see a bunch of stuff on gradcafe from last year around this time.

Mine was dreadful. I got the answers in the end but misspoke and blanked so much. Probably not going to bother to ask for an extension on the offer I'm sitting on and just jump before I'm pushed.

Before the interview they mentioned in the invitation email that I would maybe want to be prepared to talk about things relevant to my possible future research at Oxford, most notably my senior thesis. On the interview they asked about it, inquired about some specific things I've studied, and then they started asking more technical questions about the field as a whole. These were natural, but still challenging questions that require a certain level of knowledge (or even mastery) to answer or give the outline of a proof to, mostly mentioning a specific theorem and how it connects to the problem. This kinda reminded me of a mini qualifying exam, from what I hear they are about; asking progressively harder questions intended to gauge your expertise and if you get stuck somewhere, they give you gentle nudges in the direction of an answer and hopefully you can catch the rest by yourself.

I applied to the random systems CDT program, which is different than the direct DPhil as it has a course phase. Not sure if its because of this but I was not asked any outline proof of something type of question whatsoever. It was more about breaking down the structure type of questions like "what is X?" "So you said X= Y+Z, what is Y?" type of questions where they tried to poke my knowledge and tried to see whether there's any gaps in the fundamentals of the theory. They broke down everything all the way down to the basics of measure theory basically (plus some other stuff I've mentioned in my SOP). I believe I performed good, but now I got nervous due to difference in our experiences as they didnt ask outline of proof of anything from me.

My Oxford interview was about 40 minutes. There was a distinctive theme between the questions, and basically it was exploring a certain type of C* algebra through B(H). More or less 100% technical questions. Maybe like a few mins of general questions at the very beginning.

That's why I don't like the British system (both at undergrad and grad levels). It is all about exams and technicalities.

One thing that I appreciated from the interview was that, since it was with potential future supervisors, I could get a general glimpse of their vibe and style. And after the questions and problems, they got to talk a bit about their own research and what questions motivate them, how it could relate to my interests, all that. And after all, it was an opportunity to see how well I could present myself and show my interest in the subjects.

It's not uniform. Cambridge was also like this, but Lancaster was a mix, and Leeds/Glasgow were just informal chats.

Brown has started sending emails, according to GradCafe. Anyone who got an email here?
