Is anyone considering Stony Brook?

Post by MaffmaticalFisics » Wed Apr 05, 2023 4:37 pm

What do we think of this school? Should I take it over ivies?

Think about it in what respect? Are you thinking about a specific field?

It is a very strong math program, comparable with some of the ivies (and arguably better than a few in my opinion). That said, if you want to go into industry, it probably doesn't have the same name recognition as an ivy outside of academia. I can't say much else without more information about what you're looking for.

Which ivies is it better/comparable to in math?

I’m considering them versus ivies for algebraic geometry or number theory but I’ve recently had an interest in analysis.

I would anything to go to stonybrook. For geometry, the school is literally the best

No one can help you with the way you phrase your question. Is your Ivy Harvard or is it Dartmouth? What are you interested in? Have you spoken to faculty?

Not Darthmouth. Cornell, Penn, Brown, Columbia. I noted my interests above

Stony Brook is certainly a top school in geometry, with a very high number of worldwide famous faculty, a seemingly big department and the Simons Center for Geometry and Physics close by. It is also great in some close areas, such as dynamical systems and I would guess algebraic geometry.

Do consider, though, the quality of life and stipend difference to some of the ivies. It's still a public uni, so stipend may be lower, and I've heard that the campus is not that great in terms both in cost of living and things to do. These may seem innocuous but will still matter greatly in the next 5 years of your life.

I can't comment precisely in any of them, but Brown seems very strong in number theory, Penn is allegedly a center for homological mirror symmetry and some other ideas in mathematical physics, Cornell also seems great for analysis, geometry and topology.

At the end of the day, you certainly can't go wrong with any of the options you listed if you intend to pursue mathematics. Congratulations!

I'm curious - which one do you choose at the end, if you have made a decision?

I’m still hopelessly stuck. Where are you considering?

Are you really stuck between all 5 schools? Instead of just trying to decide which one you want to go to, it may be helpful to think of which ones you aren’t considering to make the decision easier

My information will probably not be helpful for you. I chose Rutgers over Maryland and Georgia Tech. Rutgers has a large department that can cover many possibilities of my interests (undecided yet, but definitely in algebra and topology).
I'm also on the waitlist of Columbia, but I don't hold too much hope.

Oh by they way, maybe I do have some helpful information.
A previous student of my letter writer's went to Brown and studied number theory under Silverman. He is going to finish his PhD in a few months and got quite good placement for his postdoc. I talked with him and it seemed he liked it a lot (one thing he mentioned was that Brown is very generous on funding). He was able to publish during his third year of PhD.
