Fall 2012 Admissions and Rejections

Post by dasgut » Wed Jan 18, 2012 12:00 pm

Hey so it seems like Northwestern, MIT, Princeton, and UChicago have started posting admits. This thread is to post any decision (admission or rejection) you get. Here's the template they use on the econ phd forum over at TestMagic.

What does this thread contribute beyond the 2012 Applicant Profiles and Admission Results thread?

It allows us to see the admissions decisions as they occur and get more detail than gradcafe. It also adds some credibility to the decisions announcement as we can verify that the receiver is a part of our forum community.

What he is asking is, what purpose does this thread serve that this thread does not?

Totally fair question.

That thread is great at displaying the end summary results for any user. However, it doesn't tell us which results are coming in and when ( I.e. is Princeton sending rejections today?) or what type of applicant received what type of decision when. True, grad cafe displays much of this same data as it becomes available. However, few users post much beyond the very very basics and there are always questions regarding the authenticity of posts. This allows us to quickly connect decisions to types of applicants as those decisions are released. Otherwise, we'd have to scan the entire decisions thread each time a school starts sending stuff to see if anybody here got anything.

What I've been doing is just using the browser find function on the current date (e.g. "Jan 18"). Makes it pretty quick and painless to find the edits.

I still think this is a good idea.
Some people may not have bothered to fill out the profile thread or may not return to update it or update the decision without the date... This gives an immediate view of which schools have just sent out acceptances or rejections and confirms what we see on gradcafe.

I just don't see a point in making either of these two threads sticky. Nobody will care about these threads after the current admission cycle, and they'll stay close to the top anyway as long as people are obsessing about decisions. The Profile and Decision threads summarize most everything that future applicants will care about in a much more compact format.

True, but they can be de-stickied after the current admissions cycle.

I don't see why you can't use gradcafe to get up to the minute updates. Acceptances/rejections usually come in clumps so it's pretty easy to tell if they're genuine or not.
The profiles thread gives exactly the kind of detailed statistics that you want, but they are only really good for future years at this point anyway. Almost all of the really competitive applications have been filed already, so there's not really too much you can change about your application except expressing interest between the first and second rounds of admission offers. Hence having more statistics really isn't going to do much of anything except make you sweat more.

I just don't understand the heat you all are giving this guy for this thread. I think it's perfectly fine. In here you can post your decision as well as give extra info like the OP did by saying he got rejected by his safety etc. It's better than putting an accepted/rejected with a date in the profile thread. It's a way to vent the anxiety.

My 2 cents.

I'm in favor of this thread. It helps people see in more detail. If you feel that it isn't necessary, then you don't have to spend time reading it, I guess. I'm just looking for all the information I can get from others going through the same process.

Just my opinion

Thanks guys. I don't know if I'll take it, dasgut - I'll have to wait to see what other offers I receive ( if any  ).
The acceptance takes a big weight off though. That nagging subconscious stream of "what if no place accepts me?" can finally be shut out. Now, the cool part is coming to terms with the realization that I AM going back in the fall to study towards a PhD and its only a matter of which school.

Comments: Woo! Pretty damn excited. I really wasn't sure I would get in - I have good grades and decent research experience, but my GRE score (770/77%) was a bit low for a top tier uni. On the other hand, it definitely helped that I knew a pretty high up professor at Princeton (I helped him typing up some slides for a few talks that he gave, and discussed my research with him a little bit), as I think he put a word in for me to the adcomm.

If I get an offer from Stanford (fingers crossed) then I'd probably take that over Princeton. But even if I don't, I'd be extremely happy.

Well, me neither, but I think that the "F" is meant for the one in "cafe". A "C" would make a lot more sense, yet "GF" might look better than "GC", but that's arguable.

If I dont get a Fellowship then I have a TA for 5 years. Missouri-Columbia is one of my top choices so VERY HAPPY to have been accepted.

$24K and that doesn't include the fellowship? That's some nice funding.
