Requesting status update

Do you think requesting an update on your status affects the probability you will be accepted?

I do not think it will, especially if you word it very politely and deferentially. Last week I emailed all the schools I hadn't heard from yet and by the end of the week three of them had accepted me after saying a decision was imminent.

considering that it's (I assume) a committee of people that make the call, I doubt it would be a discussion point in their decision.

Just let them know that you're still interested and that knowing your current status would help you to plan accordingly.
