I submitted a few short paragraphs (less than half a page). Write ONLY if you think you are sufficiently different from most students.

E.g. First generation student from a family earning income below USA poverty levels. Failed high school, was a factory worker for a few years before finding a way back to college. Turn his life around by topping his batch, and then doing a masters at a top tier department.

You don't have to be that different. If you are from a minority group (religious, ethnic, racial, sexual, etc.) then you should talk about your experience as a member of that group. Hardships, different prospectives, challenges, and opportunities, etc.

Since that was a summary of what I submitted. I am glad I am indeed different.
