Is Optimal Control Theory an accessible topic in applied math PhD programs, or is it more of a 'pure' topic? I understand it is a branch of Analysis, and that there are lots of pure and applied mathematicians who do various types of Analysis, but I'm wondering if the topic is more concentrated on one side than the other.
